23 to 26 September 2009 Port Hercules, Principality of Monaco

Plans for New Zealand marine sector representation at the 19th Monaco Yacht Show are well advanced, advises NZ Marine manager Jo Dick. New Zealand companies confirmed as exhibiting at the luxury yacht show as part of the NZ Marine group are:

  • Yachting Developments QJ2
  • Robinson Marine Interiors QJ3
  • Southern Spars QJ4
  • C-Quip QJ5
  • Events Clothing QJ6
  • NZTE QJ6/7
  • Integrated Marine Group QJ7
  • Yacht Lifeline QJ13
  • Vaudrey Miller QJ12
  • Manson Anchors QJ11
  • McMullen & Wing QJ10
  • Magnus Marine QJ9

The New Zealand contingent can enjoy four days of intensive networking opportunities as well the New Zealand-themed cocktail party, advises Jo who is co-ordinating the guest list for the invitation-only event with the member companies involved. The cocktail party takes place on Friday 25 September at 6pm on Quai Jarlan stands 2 to 13 with fine New Zealand wines and canapés. The Monaco Yacht Show expects more than 500 companies to exhibit and the event to attract nearly 30,000 participants. Despite the economic downturn, the show is fully booked for 2009 with 100 yachts on display and a waiting list for more. New Zealand-built craft on show will include the stunning ketch, Mondango (pictured below), from Alloy Yachts (www.alloyyachts.com) Jo adds: “In association with NZ Trade & Enterprise, NZ Marine has taken paid advertising to support the New Zealand presence in Monaco in Boat International and The Yacht Report.”

Calling for NZ Marine board members

If you haven’t been on the board of NZ Marine before, now’s the time to consider becoming involved says chairman Mark Wightman. “The success of NZ Marine in helping promote our marine sector globally is, in large part, due to the efforts of our board. If you have ideas of new or different things we can be doing for the betterment of our industry sector as a whole, please step forward and contribute,” says Mark. Current board member Owen Rutter from Events Clothing Company says being on the NZ Marine board has given him a greater appreciation of what can be achieved as a group internationally. “It’s good to be focused on your own business, but by working together, we see the value and opportunities from industry seminars, boat shows and other events – a lot can be achieved. It offers a chance to see what others in our industry are doing. Being a board member also gives something back to our sector. Many people underestimate their own skills and what they can contribute. Everyone brings something different to the table, so if you haven’t stood for the board before, please do consider it.” Remember the NZ Marine mission statement: "To increase profitable export growth for the New Zealand marine industry."

Busy time for Fitzroy Yachts

With the recent launch of the 45m SY Salperton IV and its high profile sponsorship of the Dubois Cup and the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, the team at New  Plymouth based Fitzroy Yachts has been very busy. Adding to their enjoyment of June’s Sardinia-based Dubois Cup, the top two yachts (Ganesa, formerly Zulu, and Moonbird, formerly Midnight) were both built by Fitzroy. The new Salperton is also designed by Dubois Naval Architects and features a 61m Southern Spars rig and an interior from Adam Lay Studio. She has a 573 square metre mainsail with an mpressive total sail area of 3752 square metres. Fitzroy’s managingdirector Rodney Martin says, “Fitzroy has a well recognised commitment to quality. This is evident in the carefully crafted negative detail of the attractive walnut cabinetry that is a feature throughout. Other impressive details include custom treatment on imported door latches and light switches. A clean contemporary atmosphere and high functionality was achieved everywhere aboard.” Salperton IV departed New Zealand in June for a three month Pacific cruise, followed by cruises in the Caribbean and Mediterranean next season.

Stainless Downunder wins BOP Export Awards

Andrew Lilly of Stainless Downunder says the company’s whole team is delighted that the company won the Sharp Tudhope-sponsored Bay of Plenty Exporter of the Year award at the end of June. “The whole awards process, preparing documents for the judges to review, is a very good process for any business to go through,” says Andrew. “The process allows us to focus on the pro’s and con’s of our business; to study the past, present and future. Judges question us, so we, in turn, question ourselves and that’s a good thing.” Andrew says the company hosted a large number of staff at the awards dinner in June, “so to win on the night gave us all a huge boost. It helps recognise the hard work of our people and, as business owners, gives us a bit of a pat on the back too.” In terms of brand credibility, Andrew believes this kind of award can only help. “Being judged as successful and proactive exporters by independent judges give our customers and prospective customers confidence in our brand and our products.” Stainless Downunder will be exhibiting at Fort Lauderdale and METS later this year with its own trade space in an effort to further enhance the brand’s international recognition.

Publicity opportunity in SuperYacht Industry magazine – SHORT DEADLINE

Wendy de Jong, editor of SuperYacht Industry, Netherlands' premier business-to-business magazine for the international superyacht society published by Yellow & Finch, has put out a all for editorial contributions for their next issue which has a specific Asia Pacific focus. Wendy says: “There is a small amount of space left and we welcome contributions from NZ Marine members for this free publicity opportunity. “We will write a comprehensive market report about the Asia/Pacific superyacht building industry. We seek relevant and up-to-date textual information which can be used for such an article as soon as possible, as well as hi-res photos. Please let us know if we need to credit   photographs.” As Wendy extended the deadline so we could include this opportunity in our July newsletter, she adds: “I cannot guarantee that we will be able to include it in the upcoming issue, but perhaps in a later stage.” SuperYacht Industry will also cover the Monaco Yacht Show 2009 in this issue, so particularly for members going to MYS, this is an excellent opportunity to promote what’s new and interesting among your products and services.

Great Southern Route prepares second edition

The well-received superyacht cruising guide, Great outhern Route, will have its second edition published by September this year, says publisher Hillary Buckman. “Our second edition will be released at this year’s 2009 Monaco Yacht Show, current for two years - 2010/2011. Since publication, Great Southern Route (GSR) has been hand delivered to thousands of superyachts and superyacht industry businesses in the Mediterranean, UK, Florida, New York, California, New Zealand, Australia, Asia, Tahiti, Fiji and many other places,” says Hillary. NZ Marine’s Jo Dick says the organisation and its members will again feature strongly in GSR. “We have worked with NZ Trade & Enterprise to develop suitably attractive advertising and editorial contributions to ensure that New Zealand’s presence in this very popular publication remains at a suitably high profile level.”

Hillary advises that a small number of advertising spaces are still available, so if you’re interested, please contact her promptly via +61 (0)2 9566 1777 or hbuckman@oceanmedia.com.au
